This weekend, I was lucky enough to attend the 5th anniversary of the Ottawa Geek Market. There are never enough cons in Ottawa, and depending on why you usually go to cons, the Ottawa Geek Market might be right up your alley!
I had a great time at the Ottawa Geek Market... I've never really been one to buy things at cons, but a few of the things that I had seen were a little tempting, even for me. The top 2 that come to my head.. An origami rose inside of a glass and wood display, the kind you would see in Beauty and the Beast, and another vendor that had medium/large hand made plush characters from all of your favorite games, movies and tv shows.
Personally, attending one of these events for me, is all about the people. I love being able to look around and see all of the incredible costumes that people have created. It's not just the cosplays though, if you're one of the people who do come to cons to buy things, the Geek Market is definitely a great place for that too!
I'm a little mixed on this tho.. because as i walked around.. if you look through the photos taken, I took photos of the things that caught my eye.. whether people in costumes, unique hand made items, or whatever else. Prices are kind of all over the place.. some stuff you can find ridiculously cheap, others can be pretty pricey, it all comes down to the effort and time put into making each individual piece. Unfortunately, I saw something at the Geek Market that I do not think belongs.. I love all the hand made pieces, but I found a vendor that was selling jewelry, including some beautiful pieces, but while looking through everything, I found a necklack that I had bought at a Hot Topic a few months back. When I got mine.. it was buy 1 get 1 half price.. so I spent about $7 on it.. at Geek Market.. it was for sale for $30.
This sort of stuff kinda pisses me off.. There were a lot of incredible vendors with some AMAZING pieces that you can buy.. and to have a vendor possibly buying stuff from local stores and selling them at double the cost.. That's not cool.. I don't think vendors like that should be able to set up shop at these events.
There is much more to the Ottawa Geek Market than just buying random stuff that you can't find anywhere else. There was several other sections that are worth checking out! There was 2 small escape rooms for people to try out near the back of the event. A booth set up with the HTC Vive virtual reality equipment for those who wanted to play around with the newest VR gaming. A large section of tables with various video game consoles set up so that you and your friends can compete in Smash Bros, Rocket League, and more!
Then there were even booths set up just to spread awareness on other great upcoming events! Like The Paranormal Show booth, showcasing the new show by the mind behind Carnival Diablo, in Ottawa October 27th, 28th, and 29th in the Arts Court Theater.
There was even a booth set up by a friend of mine for a new con coming up! Ottawa's first furry convention! Canfurence! If a furry convention sounds up your alley, I highly recommend looking into this one! This years Canfurence will be taking place on November 11th-13th at the Alt Hotel in Ottawa.
Aaaanyways.. I feel like this is turning into a big advertisement, but I gotta help friends spread word on their events, because it's hard to get your name out there in Ottawa, so if I can help out my friends, why not? :P
I definitely recommend checking out the next Ottawa Geek Market (March 31 - April 2, 2017).. This one only cost $5 in advance to get in.. or $8 at the door, but they also changed things last minute, so if you buy a ticket, whether advanced or at the doors, you get admission into the event for BOTH days! Let's face it.. $8 for 2 days of fine geekery is easily worth the price.. but when you see some of the amazing things for sale, it might end up costing quite a bit more lol
I ended up doing a quite little shoot with NotKim Cosplay at the Geek Market on the Saturday, and released the first image already. We were pretty unorganized, but we have a great time either way lol
Personally, I had a great time at the Ottawa Geek Market and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves cons like me, but doesn't care so much about the celebrity aspect of them..
Keep your eye on Tooma for more pics from my shoot with NotKim Cosplay, and more!
